Educators Praise GTP Stepping Up to Support AP Class amidst Tragedy
Mississippi educators have published an account attesting how the Global Teaching Project “stepped up to help our students persevere amidst challenging circumstances.”
In a piece in the Daily Journal, Pontotoc County Superintendent Brock Puckett and South Pontotoc High School Principal Brant Puckett recount, “This Spring, our district experienced tragedy when our revered AP Biology teacher at South Pontotoc became ill and subsequently passed. GTP responded as a member of the community—they sought to help.”
The piece explains how GTP, working free of charge, brought together educators from Ole Miss, Yale, and Harvard to provide instruction, both in person and virtually, after the teacher took medical leave. Working with Pontotoc faculty, “Together, they provided exceptional instruction for the students in a time of great need.”
Dr. Puckett and Principal Puckett “share that story to affirm what community can achieve”, and further cite other instances when GTP had also stepped up, free of charge, to support AP classes facing difficulties in the past.
In nine years working with Pontotoc County and over 40 other Mississippi public high schools, many of which are in the state’s most rural and impoverished districts, GTP has developed a range of resources to provide promising students advanced STEM courses they need to achieve their full potential. As Dr. Puckett and Principal Puckett detail, GTP has had unique success in reaching underserved communities, not just in Mississippi, but nationally.
We are grateful for the opportunity to work with our Mississippi partners, and to help their students excel.
